Lukashenko calls for new security architecture in Eurasia

In response to the current challenges, the SCO should work toward establishing a new security architecture across Eurasia, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council in Bishkek on 1 September, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko, speaking about the key areas of the SCO’s work, named security as the first among them.

“Challenges in this field are growing. Information, diplomatic, financial-economic, and other sanction pressure… These are the realities of today. The arsenal of the world’s mighty no longer includes only the technologies of color revolutions and hybrid influence. At present, direct large-scale military aggression has demonstratively returned. Our response to such a challenge should be the formation of a new security architecture in Eurasia, the creation of a common space of trust and cooperation,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The president emphasized that Belarus, together with a number of states of the SCO family, is already taking corresponding steps. In October of this year, a counter-terrorism forum will be held in Belarus. The event will take place in a new format, with joint exercises of the SCO and CIS member states.

“We also welcome the earliest launch of the SCO Universal Center for Countering Security Challenges and Threats and the SCO Anti-Drug Center. We expect that together these will help qualitatively intensify the fight against the three forces of evil, namely terrorism, separatism, and extremism,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.

He expressed confidence that stable development is also impossible without an effective system of protection against natural and man-made emergencies. Over the past quarter-century, Belarus has carried out about 90 international humanitarian operations and has repeatedly dispatched search-and-rescue teams and aircraft to assist affected countries, including SCO member states.

“The number and scale of disasters continue to grow. Therefore, to qualitatively strengthen the security of our citizens, more joint efforts are needed. Next year, Minsk will host the World Fire and Rescue Sports Championships for men and women,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

In this regard, the Belarusian leader proposed holding a meeting of the heads of the SCO disaster management authorities and co-locating it with the sports event. “Thus they will be able to exchange experience and develop solutions aimed at reducing disaster risk, protecting populations and territories, and monitoring and forecasting catastrophes across the SCO space,” he noted.
