Ambassador: Relations between Belarus, China have reached a historic peak
Relations between Belarus and China have reached a historic peak, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Zhang Wenchuan said during the opening of the 9th National Sinology School, BelTA has learned.
At the opening of the school, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Confucius Institute for Sinology at Belarusian State University (BSU), the Chinese ambassador emphasized that interaction between the two countries has reached an unprecedented level. “At present, Chinese-Belarusian relations develop rapidly, and the mechanisms of interaction become more refined. Relations have reached a historic peak – the level of comprehensive strategic partnership,” Zhang Wenchuan stated.
The ambassador pointed out that 2026 will be a landmark year for both countries: China will launch its 15th Five-Year Plan, and Belarus will begin implementing its Social and Economic Development Program for 2026-2030. “This opens up new opportunities for aligning development strategies. We are ready, together with the Belarusian side and guided by the agreements of our countries’ leaders, to strengthen political interaction and expand business cooperation,” the diplomat noted, calling on the scholars present at the event to provide the necessary intellectual support for this process.
Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Education Internationalization at BSU Viktor Kochin highlighted the importance of academic research in unlocking the enormous potential for cooperation. “Providing deep analysis and training qualified personnel are the key tasks before our national science today. BSU has been steadily expanding its ties with China: today, over 3,500 Chinese students are enrolled at our university. Understanding the logic behind modern China’s evolution as a global economic and technological hub is essential for informed decision-making in our national development,” the vice-rector stressed.
Director of BSU Confucius Institute for Sinology Anatoly Tozik outlined the strategic tasks of education. He reported that over 20 years, the institute has become a powerful research center, having trained personnel who today make up 75% of all Chinese language teachers in the country’s schools. “Now we start to train more specialists for the higher education sector. We believe that within the next five years, every university in Belarus should establish a Chinese language department,” the director said.
Anatoly Tozik also shared a broad vision of the China’s role in global processes. “As a person who has devoted more than 20 years to studying China, I emphasize that to realize its strategic interests, China needs a calm, peaceful community. For the first time in the history of world civilization, China’s strategic interests have coincided with the strategic interests of humanity. The world needs China confident in its future, and China needs a world confident in its future,” he noted. Concluding his speech, Anatoly Tozik recalled the words of President Aleksandr Lukashenko that cooperation between Belarus and China will exist forever.
